Do I need a licence to advertise puppies?

In England you need a dog breeding licence from your council if you breed three or more litters in 12 months or breed and sell dogs as a business, and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own schemes. Licensed breeders show their licence number and issuing council on every advert. Puppies must be at least eight weeks old before they go to new homes.

Buying a Sloughi puppy

Sloughi puppies for sale in the UK are genuinely rare: the RKC recorded five registrations in 2024 and just one in 2025. If you are set on the breed, contact the Sloughi Club, whose secretary also coordinates rescue, and be prepared to wait or to consider a carefully checked import. A Sloughi puppy grows into a large sighthound with a strong prey drive, which the RKC says needs more than two hours of exercise a day and suits a large home with a large garden. When you visit a litter, meet the mother, see where the puppies are raised, and ask for health test results and the RKC or overseas registration papers. Adverts on this page are placed by breeders; we do not vet individual sellers, so check every claim before paying a deposit.

Health tests to ask about

The RKC places the Sloughi in Breed Watch Category 1, meaning no breed-specific points of concern have been identified for judges beyond the breed standard. There is no breed-specific RKC DNA testing package, and the RKC's good-practice recommendation before breeding is to prioritise genetic diversity. With so few registrations each year, the UK population is tiny, so every choice of mate, including the use of imported dogs, has a real effect on the level of inbreeding.

The Sloughi Club's health and genetics page goes further. It recommends PRA (progressive retinal atrophy) testing, a thyroid TgAA test and a full DNA health test from a laboratory such as Laboklin or Wisdom, rather than a basic breed-ancestry test. It also mentions haplotype testing, offered by Feragen in Austria, which indicates how likely a pairing is to produce puppies prone to autoimmune problems; both parents need to be tested. For health questions, the RKC breed page directs owners to its Health and Breeding Support team.
