Do I need a licence to advertise puppies?

In England you need a dog breeding licence from your council if you breed three or more litters in 12 months or breed and sell dogs as a business, and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own schemes. Licensed breeders show their licence number and issuing council on every advert. Puppies must be at least eight weeks old before they go to new homes.

Using a Black & Tan Coonhound stud dog

Black & Tan Coonhound stud dogs are scarce in the UK, so owners of bitches often travel, and planning matters more than distance. Before agreeing a mating, ask to see the stud's BVA/KC hip and elbow results and a current BVA/KC/ISDS eye certificate, and check them on the RKC Health Test Results Finder. Confirm he is registered with the RKC on the Imported Breed Register so the litter can be registered. Run the pairing through the RKC's online inbreeding coefficient calculator; the RKC advises aiming at or below the breed average, but it also warns that imported dogs may have only three generations recorded and that newly recognised breeds may show no average, so read results with care. The breed club asks that both dogs are health tested before mating. Put the stud fee and terms in writing.

Health tests for a Black & Tan Coonhound stud

The RKC breed page groups pre-breeding screening into two tiers. It strongly recommends that breeders complete the Good Practice tier as a minimum: prioritising genetic diversity, plus hip and elbow scoring. The Best Practice tier adds an eye examination, and the RKC says responsible breeders should complete both tiers. The RKC does not currently offer a breed-specific DNA testing package for the Black & Tan Coonhound, and there are no additional breed-specific breeding restrictions.

The Black & Tan Coonhound Club of GB asks that all breeding dogs are hip and elbow scored and eye tested before mating. The club reports that hip dysplasia has been noted in the breed, elbow dysplasia to a far lesser degree, and some eye conditions. It points owners who are considering heart screening towards further information, and invites owners and breeders to report health problems to its breed health team so that emerging issues can be picked up. Because many UK dogs descend from the first two litters bred here, genetic diversity needs careful thought when planning a mating.
