Do I need a licence to advertise puppies?

In England you need a dog breeding licence from your council if you breed three or more litters in 12 months or breed and sell dogs as a business, and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own schemes. Licensed breeders show their licence number and issuing council on every advert. Puppies must be at least eight weeks old before they go to new homes.

Using a Chiweenie stud dog

Every first-cross Chiweenie litter needs a pedigree Chihuahua or Miniature Smooth Haired Dachshund as one parent, so judge a stud on his own breed's health record. A Dachshund stud should hold an IVDD grade from the RKC and Dachshund Health UK scheme, where a lower grade means fewer calcified discs, plus a PRA (cord1) DNA result and a recent eye certificate. A Chihuahua stud needs a current eye examination and, ahead of the 2027 health standard change, a respiratory function grade. Check his RKC registration and each result on the Health Test Results Finder. The RKC's inbreeding coefficient calculator, once known as Mate Select, compares a registered dog with his breed average, but the RKC holds no such data for crossbreeds, so keep your own records when mating two Chiweenies. The RKC warns that a stud much larger than the bitch can cause mating and whelping problems. Never pair two merle or dapple dogs, and agree terms in writing.

Health tests for a Chiweenie stud

There is no health scheme for the Chiweenie itself, and the RKC advises anyone breeding a cross to consider the tests for both parent breeds. The main concern on the Dachshund side is intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), where the spinal discs harden early and can slip, causing pain or paralysis. In the Dachshund breed council's 2018 DachsLife survey, about three in ten Miniature Smooth Haired Dachshunds over three years old were reported to have IVDD. The RKC and Dachshund Health UK scheme X-rays Dachshunds aged 24 to 48 months and grades the spine from 0 (no calcified discs) to 3 (five or more). Diet and exercise also play a part alongside genes.

For the Chihuahua, the RKC recognised breathing tests under the Respiratory Function Grading Scheme in August 2026, and these join the breed's health standard from January 2027. Breed Watch flags an overly short muzzle, faulty bites, wry jaw and retained puppy teeth in the Chihuahua, and thinness, eye irritation, poor rear movement and too little ground clearance in the Miniature Dachshund.

The RKC has not registered merle Chihuahuas since 2007, and dapple is the Dachshund name for merle. Puppies with two merle copies have a higher risk of blindness and deafness, so a litter should never come from two merle or dapple parents.
