Do I need a licence to advertise puppies?

In England you need a dog breeding licence from your council if you breed three or more litters in 12 months or breed and sell dogs as a business, and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own schemes. Licensed breeders show their licence number and issuing council on every advert. Puppies must be at least eight weeks old before they go to new homes.

Using a Lagotto Romagnolo stud dog

This page lists Lagotto Romagnolo stud dogs offered by UK owners. Before agreeing a mating, ask for the dog's JE and LSD DNA results. Both conditions are recessive, so to avoid affected puppies at least one of the pair must be clear, as the LRCGB requires of members. Check his BVA/KC hip score and elbow grade (the club's code allows only elbow grade 0 dogs to breed) and a clear eye certificate from the last year, and confirm them on the RKC Health Test Results Finder. Run the pair through the RKC Inbreeding Coefficient (COI) Lookup and aim for a litter at or below the breed average. Both dogs should be RKC registered with no endorsement that would stop the litter being registered. The club's code also says a dog that has shown signs of patellar luxation should not be used unless a veterinary orthopaedic specialist confirms injury as the cause. Stud owners can list a dog here.

Health tests for a Lagotto Romagnolo stud

The RKC's health guidance lists two DNA tests as Good Practice, the minimum it strongly recommends before breeding: juvenile epilepsy (JE) and lysosomal storage disease (LSD). Both are autosomal recessive, so pairing a carrier with a dog that is clear avoids puppies affected by that condition. The LRCGB explains that JE causes seizures in young puppies, usually starting at five to nine weeks and settling by eight to 13 weeks, while signs of LSD can appear early in life or not until middle or old age, and include movement problems, seizures, deafness and blindness. The RKC offers both tests in a breed DNA package. As Best Practice it recommends hip scoring under the BVA/KC Hip Dysplasia Scheme, elbow grading under the BVA/KC Elbow Dysplasia Scheme and an eye examination under the BVA/KC/ISDS Eye Scheme. There are no additional breed-specific breeding restrictions. The LRCGB's health pages also cover patellar luxation and cerebellar abiotrophy, and its breed-specific ethics require a clear eye certificate from within the year before a mating and allow only dogs with elbow grade 0 to be bred from. The breed is in Breed Watch Category 1: no breed-specific points of concern have been flagged for show judges.
