Do I need a licence to advertise puppies?

In England you need a dog breeding licence from your council if you breed three or more litters in 12 months or breed and sell dogs as a business, and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own schemes. Licensed breeders show their licence number and issuing council on every advert. Puppies must be at least eight weeks old before they go to new homes.

Using a Malshi stud dog

Most Malshi litters come from a Maltese and a Shih Tzu, so the stud is usually a purebred of one parent breed; later-generation litters may use a Malshi stud. Whichever he is, the stud should have an eye examination under the BVA/KC/ISDS Eye Scheme carried out within the 12 months before the mating, as the RKC advises. A Shih Tzu stud should also hold a Respiratory Function Grading result, and the RKC advises against breeding from any dog graded 3. If the stud is an RKC-registered Maltese or Shih Tzu, his results can be checked on the RKC Health Test Results Finder, and his own coefficient of inbreeding can be looked up with the RKC's inbreeding coefficient calculators. A Malshi stud is not on the Breed Register, so those calculators and breed averages do not apply to him; keep a written record of his ancestry so that related dogs are not paired.

Health tests for a Malshi stud

The Malshi has no RKC health tests of its own because it is not a recognised breed. Health advice therefore rests on the tests the RKC lists for each parent, and a responsible breeder has the relevant tests done on each parent before mating.

For the Maltese, the RKC lists an eye examination under the BVA/KC/ISDS Eye Scheme as a Best Practice test. For the Shih Tzu, the same eye examination is a Good Practice test, the minimum the RKC strongly recommends before breeding. In August 2026 the RKC also recognised breathing assessment for the Shih Tzu under the Respiratory Function Grading (RFG) scheme, which it runs with the University of Cambridge to grade dogs for brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS). The test is listed as Best Practice and is due to be added formally to the Shih Tzu health standard in January 2027.

The BVA Eye Scheme is open to crossbreeds as well as pedigree dogs, and the RKC advises that breeding dogs are examined within the 12 months before mating. RFG grades run from 0 to 3; dogs can be assessed from 12 months old and should be regraded every two years while they are used for breeding.
