Do I need a licence to advertise puppies?

In England you need a dog breeding licence from your council if you breed three or more litters in 12 months or breed and sell dogs as a business, and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own schemes. Licensed breeders show their licence number and issuing council on every advert. Puppies must be at least eight weeks old before they go to new homes.

If your bitch is a POAG carrier, a clear stud means no puppy can inherit two copies of the mutation, though around half may be carriers and should be tested before they are bred from. Check his RKC registration and run the pairing through the RKC inbreeding coefficient calculator, aiming at or below the breed average as the RKC advises. Ask about his temperament, his age, how often he has been used and any epilepsy or steroid-responsive meningitis among his relatives. Agree the fee, any repeat mating and what happens if no puppies are born in writing first. Stud dogs here are listed by their owners, so always make your own checks.

Health and screening

The Petit is in Breed Watch Category 1, so no points of concern specific to the breed have been flagged for special attention by judges. The RKC lists three Good Practice measures before breeding: a DNA test for primary open angle glaucoma (POAG-5), eye testing under the BVA/KC/ISDS Eye Scheme, and prioritising genetic diversity. The BVA's January 2026 list of inherited eye diseases also names POAG for the Petit.

POAG is a gradual build-up of pressure inside the eye that slowly leads to blindness; the RKC says it usually appears between three and six years of age, though later onset is possible. It is inherited as an autosomal recessive condition. A dog with two copies of the mutation is likely to develop POAG, while a carrier with one copy will not develop it from this mutation but can pass it on. The breed club stresses that a DNA result does not replace clinical eye examinations, because glaucoma can have other causes.

The club also monitors other eye problems, hypothyroidism, Cushing's disease, pancreatitis and craniomandibular osteopathy across both breeds, notes that steroid-responsive meningitis has concerned Petit owners in some countries, and collects DNA from BGVs diagnosed with epilepsy. No breeder can guarantee a puppy's health.
