Do I need a licence to advertise puppies?

In England you need a dog breeding licence from your council if you breed three or more litters in 12 months or breed and sell dogs as a business, and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own schemes. Licensed breeders show their licence number and issuing council on every advert. Puppies must be at least eight weeks old before they go to new homes.

Using a Pomchi stud dog

A stud for a Pomchi litter may be a Pomeranian, a Smooth Coat Chihuahua or a Pomchi, and the checks differ. A pure-bred stud should be RKC registered, with results you can confirm on the Health Test Results Finder: a current eye certificate under the BVA/KC/ISDS Eye Scheme and, for a Chihuahua, a respiratory function grade. The RKC's inbreeding coefficient calculator works from its pedigree records, so it can show how inbred a pure-bred stud is himself, and the RKC advises keeping pedigree litters at or below the breed average. A Pomchi stud cannot be on the RKC Breed Register, so ask for his BVA eye results and details of his parents' tests. Avoid merle studs. Agree the fee, what happens if no puppies result and any repeat mating in writing before the bitch visits.

Health tests for a Pomchi stud

Because the Pomchi is a crossbreed, the RKC sets no health tests for it, so look at what the RKC recommends for each parent breed. For both the Pomeranian and the Smooth Coat Chihuahua, eye testing under the BVA/KC/ISDS Eye Scheme is listed as Best Practice. The BVA eye scheme is open to crossbreeds without RKC registration. In August 2026 the RKC added breathing assessment for brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS), using its Respiratory Function Grading (RFG) scheme, to the Best Practice tests for the Smooth Coat Chihuahua, and it will be added formally to the breed's Health Standard from January 2027. Dogs can be graded from 12 months old and should be reassessed every two years while being bred from. The Pomeranian is one of the breeds the RFG scheme covers, but the RKC does not currently list the test on the Pomeranian breed page.

Both parent breeds are in Breed Watch Category 2. Judges are asked to check that Pomeranians over 12 months old have a fully closed fontanelle, and to watch Smooth Coat Chihuahuas for faults of bite and teeth, wry jaw and an excessively short muzzle. The RKC does not register merle Chihuahuas, citing a higher risk of impaired hearing and sight. No test result can guarantee a healthy puppy.
