About the Gundog group
The Royal Kennel Club's Gundog group is made up of breeds developed to find, flush and retrieve game for people shooting. It divides into four types by the work they were bred for: retrievers, which mark and bring back shot game; spaniels, which hunt close cover and flush game within range; pointers and setters, which range open ground and freeze on point to show where birds are; and the hunt, point and retrieve breeds, which do all three.
Many gundog breeds have separate working and show lines. Working-bred dogs are selected for field ability and drive, show-bred dogs for conformation to the breed standard, and the two can differ in build, coat and energy. Ask a breeder which kind of line their dogs come from and whether the parents have field trial, working test or show results.
