Do I need a licence to advertise puppies?

In England you need a dog breeding licence from your council if you breed three or more litters in 12 months or breed and sell dogs as a business, and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own schemes. Licensed breeders show their licence number and issuing council on every advert. Puppies must be at least eight weeks old before they go to new homes.

Using a Jack Chi stud dog

A Jack Chi litter can come from a Jack Russell Terrier bred to a Smooth Coat Chihuahua, or from two Jack Chis, and the checks depend on the stud. A Jack Russell stud should have DNA results for PLL, LOA and SCA and a BVA/KC/ISDS eye certificate from the past year. A Chihuahua stud should have a current eye certificate and ideally a BOAS grade under the Respiratory Function Grading scheme, listed as Best Practice since August 2026. Check a registered stud's results on the RKC Health Test Results Finder. The RKC inbreeding coefficient calculator, once known as Mate Select, uses RKC pedigree records, so it only covers registered dogs; for a Jack Chi stud, ask for his known ancestry. The RKC will not register Chihuahua puppies from a merle parent, citing hearing and sight risks, so avoid merle studs, and put the terms in writing.

Health tests for a Jack Chi stud

As a crossbreed, the Jack Chi has no RKC health standard or Breed Watch category of its own. The RKC advises buyers of crossbreed puppies to ask which breed-related health tests both parents have had, using the lists for each parent breed as the yardstick.

For the Jack Russell Terrier, the RKC lists a DNA test for primary lens luxation, a painful inherited eye condition that can lead to blindness, as Good Practice. DNA tests for two forms of ataxia and eye examination under the BVA/KC/ISDS scheme are Best Practice.

For the Smooth Coat Chihuahua, eye examination is Best Practice. In August 2026 the RKC also recognised a breathing test for brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS) as Best Practice, using the Respiratory Function Grading scheme it runs with the University of Cambridge; it is due to be added formally to the breed's health standard from January 2027. Grading starts at 12 months and is repeated every two years while a dog is bred from. The Chihuahua is in Breed Watch Category 2, with judges asked to look out for faulty bites and teeth, retained puppy teeth, wry jaw and an overly short muzzle. The RKC does not register Chihuahua puppies from a merle parent because of risks to hearing and sight.
