Do I need a licence to advertise puppies?
In England you need a dog breeding licence from your council if you breed three or more litters in 12 months or breed and sell dogs as a business, and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own schemes. Licensed breeders show their licence number and issuing council on every advert. Puppies must be at least eight weeks old before they go to new homes.

About bed bug detection dogs
A bed bug detection dog is trained to find the scent of live bed bugs, often before people can see any sign of them. In the UK, pest control companies use bed bug sniffer dogs to check hotels, care homes, student housing and other homes. Breeders on this directory supply puppies and young dogs with the aptitude for scent work. They do not supply trained or certified detection dogs.
What this work involves
Bed bugs hide in mattress seams, bed frames, skirting boards and furniture joints, and a small early outbreak is easy to miss when checking by eye. A trained dog can narrow down where bed bugs are active, so a technician can confirm it and plan treatment.
A bed bug dog hotel inspection is carried out in one of two main ways. In an on-site search, the handler walks the dog through each room. The dog sniffs beds, furniture and soft furnishings and indicates on a specific spot. The other method is based on air samples. Rentokil, which offers both, describes technicians using a specially designed vacuum backpack to collect air from just inside each room’s entrance, without fully going in. The samples go to a facility where trained dogs check them. Rentokil says its technicians can potentially sample more than 200 rooms in a day, with results in about five days.
Accuracy depends on the quality of training, regular performance testing and a handler who can read the dog. Ask any provider how their teams are assessed.
Who trains and supplies these dogs in the UK
Rentokil Pest Control launched its Bed Bug Dog Detect service in 2023, in response to a sharp rise in bed bug enquiries. Rentokil states that its sniffer dogs found bed bug samples in rooms up to four times as often as visual inspections by trained pest control technicians.
Other pest control firms and independent handlers offer on-site dog inspections. Standards vary between providers, so recognised qualifications are a useful check. The National Association of Security Dog Users (NASDU) offers a Level 3 Certificate for a Bedbug Detection Dog Handler. It is endorsed by Highfield, which is itself an awarding organisation regulated by Ofqual. NASDU says the programme follows the training principles in BS 8517-2. This is the British Standards Institution’s code of practice for the use of detection dogs. It covers records, kennelling, dog health and welfare, training and operational use, although its stated scope is security searches such as drugs, firearms and explosives rather than pest detection.
The supply model is commercial. Pest control companies and handlers buy young dogs, train them in-house or with specialist trainers, and sell inspection services. Breeders supply dogs with the right nose, drive and temperament.
Breeds and lines
Spaniels, Labradors and Beagles are common choices, and Rentokil says Labrador Retrievers, German Shepherds, Beagles and Belgian Shepherds are often used as sniffer dogs. Springers and Cockers are small enough to work around beds and furniture. Working lines give them the drive to search many rooms in a shift. Labradors are steady in busy buildings. Beagles have an excellent nose and a friendly manner in people’s homes, although they tend to be more independent than gundogs and can be harder to train.
Bed bug dogs spend their days in corridors, lifts and bedrooms among guests, residents and staff. A calm, sociable temperament matters as much as drive.
